About Me

Hi, my name is Maya. I am a painter and art educator based in San Francisco, CA. I paint water, landscapes, and people interacting with the natural world. Most recently, I have been interested in the motif of rivers, which has allowed me to explore themes of transformation, memory, dreams and the subconscious.
The natural beauty and strong community of rural Humboldt County, where I am from, have guided my priorities and my artwork. My painting process begins with photography. I take photos, then reinterpret them through painting. I work with an impressionistic approach and I am most interested in capturing atmosphere and emotional impact.
I am a longtime artist and art educator. After studying Art Education in college, I taught high school art in Humboldt County for three years. I now work at California College of the Arts in San Francisco in Academic Advising and Student Services.
